The Halloween Skin Ritual: How to Prep, and How to Recover

Halloween makeup asks a lot of your skin — hours of coverage, layers of product, maybe something dramatic you'd never wear on an ordinary Tuesday. It deserves a ritual on both ends: one to prepare for it properly, and one to undo it properly once the night is over.

This is that ritual, in full. Half of it borrows almost directly from a real 1930s beauty routine. The other half leans on a practice women have trusted for decades to genuinely restore skin, not just clean it. Here's both halves, start to finish.

Part One: How to Prep

Great Halloween makeup isn't really about the products you put on top. It's about what's underneath them. A clean, smooth, properly moisturized surface is what lets makeup go on evenly and actually stay put for a full night — and it's exactly what a genuine golden-age beauty routine was built around.

Starting in the 1930s, women followed a three-step ritual that would look familiar to anyone today: cleanse, tone, moisturize. It was popularized largely by Pond's, using a cleansing cream, a witch hazel astringent to tone, and vanishing cream to finish. Our version follows the same logic, expanded slightly to give your skin everything it needs before a full night of makeup.

Step 1. Cleanse with Skin Tonic to remove any oil, dirt, or residue and start with a genuinely clean canvas. This is also where the vintage detail gets interesting: all three of our Skin Tonics are actually formulated with real witch hazel, the same toning ingredient from that original 1930s routine — but unlike most modern witch hazel astringents, ours never contains alcohol, so you get the genuine ingredient without the drying, stripping effect alcohol tends to bring with it.

Step 2. Apply the Dead Sea Mud Mask to deep clean and gently exfoliate, clearing away the dull, dry surface layer that makeup tends to cling to unevenly.

Step 3. Cleanse again with Skin Tonic to remove any remaining mask residue and fully reset the skin.

If you have dry skin. add a layer of Overnight Cream here, before the final step, for the extra moisture dry skin needs to keep makeup from looking flaky or settling into fine lines.

Step 4 (always last). Finish with Vanishing Cream. It isn't just a moisturizer — it's your makeup primer, creating the smooth, matte-adjacent base that makeup was always meant to be applied over.

One more detail worth doing properly: if you have any fine facial hair you'd like gone before applying makeup, take care of it the day before, not the day of. Waxing or a depilatory cream can cause temporary redness or sensitivity, and a full day gives your skin time to recover before makeup goes on top of it. This isn't a new idea, either — waxing genuinely came into fashion in the 1920s and 30s for exactly this reason. Smoother skin has always meant smoother makeup.

Part Two: Restoration and the Cold Cream Ritual

However your Halloween goes, your skin will have earned some real recovery time by the end of it. This is where the Cold Cream Ritual comes in — the same restorative practice women have leaned on for decades to undo a heavy night of makeup, without anything harsh or stripping.

Step 1. Cleanse with Cold Cream, massaging it into dry skin to dissolve the day's — or night's — makeup, then wipe away with a warm washcloth.

Step 2. Apply a second, thicker layer of Cold Cream and simply leave it on. This is the step that actually does the restorative work — the cream needs real time to soak in and repair. Pairing this with a warm bath turns it into a genuine moment of relaxation rather than a rushed skincare step.

Step 3. Once your bath is finished, wipe away the Cold Cream with a warm washcloth.

Step 4. Rub whatever cream remains into your skin rather than wiping it all away. That last bit is pure moisture, and your skin will want it.

If you have dry skin. follow with an application of Overnight Cream for an extra layer of moisture while you sleep.

There's real precedent for this, too. By the 1940s, it had become common practice for women to leave cold cream on overnight rather than washing it off completely, letting it work as an overnight treatment instead of a same-day rinse. The instinct to let cold cream simply sit and do its job, rather than rushing it, is exactly what this ritual is built on — the same patience the rest of this month's rituals have all asked for.

The Whole Ritual, Start to Finish

Prep properly. Wear whatever you want, as boldly as you want. Then take just as much care undoing it. No matter how your Halloween goes, your skin earned this — and so did you.
