What Summer Actually Did to Your Hair — And Why September Is the Month to Repair It

You already know the feeling. Hair that catches where it never used to. Ends that feel more like straw than hair. A scalp that's tight, maybe a little itchy, in a way it wasn't back in May. If you were blonde by June, possibly a faint green cast you can't quite explain.

None of that is bad luck, and none of it is your imagination. It's the fairly predictable result of what four ordinary summer things — chlorine, salt water, sun, and wind — actually do to hair at a structural level. Understanding the "why" makes September's repair work a lot more satisfying, so let's actually go there.

A 60-Second Tour of Your Hair, So the Rest of This Makes Sense

Each strand of hair has two parts that matter here. The cortex is the inner core — it's made almost entirely of keratin, a fibrous protein held together by chemical links called disulfide bonds, and it's what gives hair its strength and elasticity. The cuticle is the outer layer — overlapping, translucent scales, a bit like roof shingles, that lie flat when hair is healthy and lift or roughen when it isn't.

Nearly everything summer does to your hair comes down to one of two things: breaking those internal protein bonds in the cortex, or roughing up the protective shingles of the cuticle. Once you can picture that, the rest of this is easy to follow.

Chlorine: A Chemical That's Doing Exactly What It's Designed to Do

Chlorine is added to pools because it's an oxidizing agent — it's specifically formulated to break down organic material so bacteria can't survive in the water. Hair is organic material too, which means chlorine doesn't discriminate. It strips away the natural oils that keep the cuticle smooth, and it breaks down the same protein structure that gives hair its strength.

That's the mechanical explanation for why hair feels rougher, drier, and more tangled by the end of a summer of pool visits than it did in June. It's also why color-treated hair fades faster and why, in some cases, chlorine reacts with oxidized metals like copper in the water to leave light or bleached hair with that telltale greenish tint.

Salt Water: Nature's Own Dehydrator

Salt is hygroscopic, meaning it actively attracts and pulls moisture toward itself — it's the exact same property that makes salt useful for curing meat and preserving food. Sit hair in salt water and that same pull works on the moisture inside each strand, drawing it out and leaving hair stiffer and more dehydrated than it was going in.

There's a second effect that's easy to miss: as salt water evaporates, it leaves behind tiny crystals on the hair itself. Those crystals are abrasive — closer to fine sandpaper than most people realize — and every gust of wind, every brush stroke, every toss of the head grinds them against the cuticle, roughening it further. Salt-crystal residue has even been described as acting like a magnifying glass for UV rays, intensifying the sun damage happening at the very same time.

UV: The Slow, Structural Kind of Damage

Sun damage to hair isn't just about fading color, though it does that too. UV radiation actually penetrates the hair shaft and attacks it at both layers. UVB tends to affect the cuticle, while UVA reaches deeper into the cortex, breaking down the disulfide bonds in keratin that we mentioned earlier and degrading melanin, the pigment responsible for hair's natural color.

That's the real reason hair often looks lighter by late summer, and why it isn't the flattering kind of lightening. It's also why hair can feel measurably weaker and more porous after a summer of regular sun exposure, even for people who never set foot in a pool or the ocean.

Wind: The Quiet Amplifier

Wind rarely gets blamed for hair damage, but it plays a real role. Constant movement means constant friction, and friction against an already-roughened cuticle — courtesy of chlorine, salt, and sun — creates more tangles, more knots, and ultimately more breakage every time hair gets combed or brushed out. Wind doesn't usually damage hair on its own. It amplifies whatever damage is already there.

The Scalp Has Its Own, Separate Story

Everything above is about the hair shaft itself, but the scalp is skin, and it goes through its own version of summer. Chlorine and salt both disrupt the scalp's natural moisture barrier the same way they disrupt hair, which is why flaking and irritation that felt manageable in spring can flare up by August. Direct sun exposure, especially along a part line that gets consistent light, can leave the scalp tender or sensitive in a way that's easy to mistake for something else entirely. And the sebum and sweat your scalp produces to protect itself works overtime in summer heat, changing the day-to-day environment your scalp is living in, whether you notice it or not.

What Women Used to Do About All of This

Here's the part that surprised us most while researching this piece: the instinct to physically block the damage, rather than just repair it afterward, is centuries old — and it shows up almost everywhere you look.

The parasol is the clearest example. Its name literally comes from the Latin for "to shield" and "sun," and by the Victorian and Edwardian eras it had become an everyday essential for exactly the reason we'd recognize today: constant, direct sun exposure does real damage over time, to skin and hair both. Wide-brimmed sun hats served the same purpose more casually, and both remained a fixture of proper summer dress well into the twentieth century.

Then there's a detail we didn't expect to find: the modern swim cap wasn't really invented for hygiene. When rubber and latex swim caps became widespread in the late 1920s, it was largely because women who'd invested real time and money into a wave or a set didn't want chlorine or salt water anywhere near it. Vintage swim cap advertising from the era even referred to caps and matching bathing turbans as "millinery for mermaids" — a fashion accessory with a very practical job. Production dropped off during WWII when rubber was rationed for the war effort, then surged right back in the 1950s, right alongside the perm's growing popularity, because the two problems were connected: styled hair and chlorinated water have never gotten along.

Headscarves and turbans did similar work in a softer way. Through the 1940s and 50s, women wore them at the beach and in the sun specifically to keep hair shielded from wind and UV exposure, all while looking entirely put-together doing it — glamour and protection, accomplished with a single square of fabric.

None of these women had the vocabulary for disulfide bonds or hygroscopic pull. They didn't need it. They understood, correctly, that the best defense against sun and water damage is simply not exposing hair to quite so much of it in the first place — and they built that understanding directly into how they dressed.

Why September Is the Month All of This Becomes Impossible to Ignore

Chlorine, salt, sun, and wind rarely do their damage in an obvious, single moment. They accumulate, quietly, week after week, until the cumulative total is simply too much to overlook anymore. September is that moment. It's when a whole season of small, invisible stress finally becomes visible — in texture, in color, in the way hair simply behaves differently than it did back in May.
